Transforming Learning Into Practice

I recently gave a presentation on this topic at the State Victims Assistance Academy Leadership Symposium, and people seemed to love it! I'm excited that so many want to use Adult Learning Theory and research-based learning strategies to make sure their training is effective.

So what did I tell them? First:

REMEMBER YOUR PEER!

I distilled various adult learning theories down into what I think are the essential components. You can't forget these elements if you want your training to be successful.

Second (and in no particular order), I talked about how training is the best when it is:

We did several activities that embodied each of these elements, and the attendees seemed to really enjoy them! I especially loved getting to introduce everyone to Theater of the Oppressed (TO) or forum theater (Boal, 1985). I also talked about how and when to use the case method and dialogic teaching.

At the end of the presentation, I shared my final recommendations for how these SVAA leaders should proceed with edifying their faculty once they returned to their jobs.
